ON THE SEA from OSA at Facets [Lincoln Park]

Open Space Arts invites you to join us for our next Queer Expression Film Fest screening at FACETS Film Forum, part of our ongoing Gay Movie of the Month series.

On the Sea is a deeply moving drama written and directed by Helen Walsh, set against the rugged and breathtaking backdrop of a remote Welsh fishing community. The film immerses viewers in the emotional complexity of life by the coast and offers a profound exploration of masculinity, desire, and personal truth.

At the center of the story is Jack, a seasoned hand raker whose life has revolved around the tide-swept mussel beds of North Wales. When a young itinerant deckhand named Daniel arrives and openly expresses his feelings for Jack, long-buried desires and difficult choices begin to surface. In a place where tradition, church life, and family ties are tightly woven into everyday existence, Jack must confront who he truly is and what he wants from life and love.

Critics have praised On the Sea for its emotional subtlety and powerful performances. As one reviewer noted, the film “finds its strength in the subtlety of the writing and the power of the understated performances,” capturing the raw, windswept beauty of its setting while tenderly exploring its characters’ inner lives

These monthly screenings celebrate bold, intimate, and internationally acclaimed queer cinema, bringing powerful stories to the big screen while creating space for conversation, community, and connection. Each program is thoughtfully curated to showcase filmmakers whose work explores identity, desire, and human connection with honesty and artistry.

Screenings take place on the final Monday of each month at 7:00 PM at FACETS Film Forum (1517 West Fullerton).

We often choose a nearby spot to gather for a casual, informal dinner before the screening, so keep your options open and watch for those details as the date approaches.
