JERKER at Open Space Arts [Uptown]

  • Sunday, November 01, 2026
  • 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM
  • 1411 W. Wilson

Chicago PrimeTimers are invited to attend JERKER, Robert Chesley’s landmark 1986 play about two gay men who develop an intimate relationship through a series of telephone calls at a time when AIDS was still surrounded by fear, mystery, and uncertainty. By turns funny, erotic, tender, and heartbreaking, JERKER is recognized as one of the essential American plays to emerge from the early years of the epidemic. This Open Space Arts production commemorates the play’s 40th anniversary.

Please note:JERKER contains graphic sexual language and partial nudity.

JERKER is part of BEFORE WE ARE HISTORY, Open Space Arts’ three-week project exploring how theater responded to HIV/AIDS as the crisis unfolded—and how artists continue to preserve and reinterpret that history today. The project begins the preceding weekend with ONE, Jeff Hagedorn’s historic 1983 monologue, believed to be the first publicly produced play about AIDS in the United States.

The performance will be followed by a discussion for those wishing to stay
